IN THE MOMENT: WOMEN COMPOSERS OF THE 21ST CENTURY
IN SPRING OF 2010, Oni Buchanan will be premiering a series of concerts entitled IN THE MOMENT: WOMEN COMPOSERS OF THE 21st CENTURY, featuring solo piano works written by women composers since the year 2000. Ms. Buchanan has designed a vibrant series coinciding with National Women’s History month, with performance pieces spanning a multitude of styles and composed by women from many different backgrounds and at many different places in their careers. Her first program includes works by American composers Missy Mazzoli, Cindy Cox, Annie Gosfield, and Joan Tower; Taiwanese-American composer Mei-Fang Lin; Cuban-American composer Tania Léon; Venezuelan composer Adina Izarra; Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy; Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, and British composer Alwynne Pritchard. The styles of the pieces are as diverse as their authors, ranging from virtuosic to percussive to electronic to meditative, with influences from the sounds of salsa, alternative rock, factory machinery, and blues.
Future programs on the series may include works by such composers as Tamar Diesendruck, Kaija Saariaho, Shih-Hui Chen, Orianna Webb, Melissa Hui, Nurit Jugend, Olga Neuwirth, Unsuk Chin, Juliet Kiri Palmer, Gabriela Lena Frank, Vera Ivanova, and Lisa Bielawa, among many others.
